Spotlight Musicals has officially announced its 2026 world premiere: Der Schimmelreiter – Ein Mystery-Musical, inspired by Theodor Storm’s iconic novella. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the North Sea marshes, this atmospheric new production explores the tension between man and nature, reason and superstition — in a story where the line between myth and reality begins to blur.

Hauke Haien, a visionary outsider in a coastal village, dares to defy centuries of tradition with his plans for a new dike. But as strange occurrences multiply, and the legend of the ghostly rider spreads, the villagers begin to question whether Hauke’s ambition might come at too high a price.

The production will feature immersive staging with lifelike puppetry, wind and water effects, and innovative video design — transforming Fulda’s historical theatre space into a storm-swept coastal world.

Kevin Schroeder will co-write the book and lyrics alongside collaborators Dennis Martin and Christoph Jilo. The three previously worked together on other original Spotlight Musical productions such as Die Päpstin and Robin Hood. For Der Schimmelreiter, they reunite to bring this dark, poetic material to the stage in a powerful new musical form.
